Upgrading from Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 to 2015

Back to Blog Listing

Do you want to upgrade from Dynamics CRM 2013 to Dynamics CRM 2015, but you’re not sure what’s needed? In this blog we look at some of the main considerations for an upgrade.

Supported Software

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 Supported Server and Client Software versions are as follows:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012
  • Microsoft Windows 7
  • Microsoft Windows 8
  • Internet Explorer 10
  • Internet Explorer 11
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2010
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2013

Upgrading CRM On-Premise & CRM Online

For CRM Online customers the upgrade will be performed by Microsoft Online Services on an agreed date. As such the upgrade is performed as part of the cloud service. Typically a test (non-production) instance is scheduled for upgrade first, with the production environment upgrade scheduled for a suitable later date.
If you have an on-premise deployment then you can undertake the upgrade internally, or look for a suitable Dynamics CRM partner to assist with minimising the upgrade risk.

Solutions in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015

It is worth considering whether any third party solutions you rely on are available for Dynamics CRM 2015.

  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 solutions will integrate with CRM 2015 deployments but cannot be imported into a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 deployment
  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 solutions cannot be imported into a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 deployment.

Upgrading Forms in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 forms retained in a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 deployment will also be retained and supported in an upgraded Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 deployment. There is functionality provided in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 to merge these v5 Information forms into v6 forms in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015.

Migration Tools

  • Microsoft provide documentation, such as the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 Deployment Guide and the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 SDK.
  • Application tools are provided in the Form Designer to provide guidance and functionality to support the upgrade process such as Merge Forms which allows you to merge Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 form customisations into a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 form.

Training

We recommend that suitable training materials/courses are put in place for staff to ensure that they are familiar with the changes in Dynamics CRM 2015.
